SHE’D TACKLED A GODDAMN bear. Jude shook his head. It had been frightening—terrifying ... and so damn sexy watching her go full blown ninja nurse on the shifter in the emergency room. He’d almost jumped in there, but then he’d noticed the other staff, how they’d fallen back, waiting for something. He realized that something was Harry as soon as she’d stepped through that door and the nurse at the counter had nodded to the orderly down the hell, hefted that chunky syringe, and tossed it to Harry. She was amazing. But he still wasn’t going to agree to her batshit-crazy plan.

“No.”

“I can do this, Jude.”

“But you’re not going to.”

Harry’s lips tightened, and she glanced beyond him to Josh and Jesse. They were all in Harry’s living room. Jude shook his head. “They can’t help you. Not with this.” He looked briefly over his shoulder.

Josh winced, then shrugged. “Sorry, Harry. Jude has a point. It’s too dangerous.” Jesse nodded as well, his expression sympathetic.

“We can finally catch this bastard,” she cried. “Don’t you want that?”

“Of course, I do—but not if it means putting you in his crosshairs,” Jude snapped.

“But I’m not—he has no idea I exist,” she argued. “I’m the one hooking into his mind, not the other way around.”

“He’s a warlock—a powerful warlock. What makes you think he can’t figure it out?” Jude asked.

“Because it doesn’t seem to work that way. He was totally oblivious to me last time—”

“There won’t be a next time,” Jude stated. He folded his arms. She might be able to wrestle a bear, but he’d already lost someone he loved to this particular monster. He wasn’t about to let Harry join that club.

“I need to do this, Jude,” Harry said, crossing her own arms.

His eyes narrowed. There was something in her voice, a pleading that was so unexpected from tough, snappy Harry. “Why? Why you? Why do you need to be the one tapping on a serial killer’s shoulder?”

He was surprised by the glisten of tears in her hazel eyes.

“Not a day goes by that I don’t miss your sister.” She rasped, and pointed to the sofa. “We used to sit there and watch movies. Talk about our day. Paint our nails.” She gestured to the kitchen. “Josie made the best hot cocoa. That was our nightcap before bed during winter.” Her smile was bittersweet. “And she made the worst cocktails. Like, super strong.”

She took a deep breath, and he heard the shudder in it. “Josie was more than just a friend,” she whispered, and a tear rolled down her cheek. “She was like a sister to me, the sister I never had. After my mom and dad died, and then Nanna, I—I felt so alone. I still remember that first day at college, feeling so overwhelmed, so scared, so lonely, and meeting my roommate—this amazing, confident, funny girl ...” Harry’s smile was weak, and Jude felt the burn at the back of his own eyes at the mental image she’d called forth in his mind of his sister, seeing her in much the same light.
